One Year Later, Review Still Pending After Deadly Officer Shooting

One year after the deadliest law enforcement shooting in Charlotte’s history, the U.S. Marshals Service has yet to complete its internal after-action review of the April 29, 2024, incident that claimed the lives of four officers.
The shooting occurred while officers attempted to serve a warrant on suspect Terry Hughes, who was later shot and killed during the exchange. The victims included Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Joshua Eyer, North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections officers Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, and Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks Jr.
One year ago, we faced the darkest day in CMPD’s history. We lost four heroes- CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer, Deputy U.S. Marshal Tommy Weeks and N.C. Department of Adult Correction Investigators Alden Elliott & Samuel Poloche. Their sacrifice changed us forever. We honor them by… pic.twitter.com/eRYnuvae1Z

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the U.S. Marshals Service pledged to enhance protection for task force officers and outlined recommendations for improved equipment and tactical training. The agency’s latest annual report highlights investments in officer safety and de-escalation practices since the shooting, though specifics remain limited.
Law enforcement experts have questioned the strategy and timing of the warrant operation, calling for more transparency and faster follow-through on safety reforms. As the anniversary passes, the incomplete internal review continues to raise concerns among officers and the broader public.
Congressman Mark Harris sits on the House Judiciary Committee, which oversees the U.S. Marshals Service emphasized the importance of learning from the situation and supporting law enforcement through legislative measures.
“The commitment to make sure law enforcement is a priority is certainly there. As people set out to target law enforcement, they need to know that the government’s going to target them and bring them to justice,” Harris said. “The more information that they have going into situations, going into circumstances that can be helpful in preventing such a tragedy as what we had here, that would be helpful. If there were mistakes that were made, you learn. If there’s more information that could have been available, try to see how you can get more information available, so where everybody has the data, everybody knows what they’re walking into.”
