Bobby Brown isn’t holding back when it comes to how he really feels about Britney Spears’ 2004 version of his hit song, “My Prerogative.” During a sit-down on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, the R&B legend made it crystal clear that he was disappointed with how the pop star handled his iconic track, saying she flat-out “butchered” it.

Originally released in 1988, “My Prerogative” was a chart-topping success for Brown, becoming a defining anthem of the new jack swing movement and a declaration of personal freedom. So when Spears released her synth-heavy version nearly two decades later, Brown had high hopes — especially since he gave the cover his blessing beforehand.

But those hopes didn’t last long. “I was expecting her to do something different,” Brown admitted. He’d hoped she’d make it her own while still honoring the spirit of the original. Instead, he was left unimpressed with what he heard. “She butchered it,” he said bluntly during the podcast.

Britney’s version was released as the lead single from her Greatest Hits: My Prerogative album and, despite not charting on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., it became a global success — topping charts in countries like Italy, Ireland, and Norway. For many younger fans, Spears’ rendition was their introduction to the track. “I only knew Bobby Brown’s ‘My Prerogative’ because of Britney’s cover,” one fan posted online.

Still, Brown’s feelings haven’t softened with time. He previously criticized the cover back in 2004, praising the video’s look but slamming the musical delivery. “Call me, Britney. We’ll get together and I’ll show you how to really do it,” he joked at the time. “Don’t do that again.”

As of now, Spears hasn’t responded to Brown’s recent remarks — but fans on both sides continue to debate which version of the song holds up best.
