Rickey Smiley Drops New Comedy Special Fool-ish on Hulu This May

Rickey Smiley is stepping back into the spotlight with Fool-ish, his first comedy special in more than a decade. The hour-long special is set to premiere May 30 on Hulu and marks a major comeback for the beloved comedian, radio host, and actor.

Filmed at the historic Lyric Theater in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, Fool-ish features Smiley’s signature humor, quirky characters, and laugh-out-loud takes on life, family, and pop culture. Known for blending real-life experiences with sharp, relatable comedy, Smiley says this special is a reflection of everything he’s been through—and how he’s managed to keep laughing through it all.

“I knew after over ten years I had to offer something that would satisfy my fans,” Smiley said. “I’ve been through a lot of transformation and trauma these past few years, and I was determined to get through it. I think I’ll have a deeper connection with my audience now. We can find humor in so much of life. Fool-ish is for people of all ages—from those who grew up playing with Etch A Sketch to those who were raised on iPads.”

The special is directed by David E. Talbert (Baggage Claim, First Sunday), marking his first time directing a stand-up project. Fool-ish also became the center of a bidding war before ultimately landing on Hulu, which is a clear sign that fans and networks alike are eager for Smiley’s return to stand-up.

Smiley, who has been anchoring The Rickey Smiley Morning Show from Atlanta for the past 20 years, is no stranger to TV or radio. He previously hosted BET’s Comic View and starred in the hit reality series Rickey Smiley For Real. In addition to his comedy, Smiley is an author. His latest book, Sideshow: Living with Loss and Moving Forward with Faith, shares his personal journey after the heartbreaking loss of his eldest son to a drug overdose.
With Fool-ish, Smiley proves that even after all life’s ups and downs, laughter is still the best medicine—and he’s got plenty to share.
