In a vulnerable new interview with Essence, the Harlem actress shared that she was blindsided by the divorce. “It’s nothing that I would have ever chosen,” Good said. “When I realized that it was happening, I was devastated.”

Good and Franklin married in 2012 and announced their separation in December 2021, finalizing the divorce just one week after what would have been their 10-year anniversary. The couple had publicly promoted their values around faith and waiting for intimacy in their 2017 book The Wait, which made the breakup even more shocking to fans.

“There was nothing scandalous,” Good explained. “No one did anything malicious. He’s still an incredible and beautiful person.” But despite the respectful split, the emotional toll hit her hard—especially since divorce was something she never saw for herself. “I always said, ‘I’m never getting divorced.’ I was in it forever—good, bad, whatever came,” she added.

What made things even more difficult was the fear of history repeating itself. Good admitted that watching her own parents divorce after ten years of marriage haunted her. “That was my biggest fear,” she said.

The split didn’t just shake her personal life—it also caused her to question some of her spiritual practices. “I struggled,” she revealed. “I was like, ‘Should I still be celibate? What do I even believe anymore?’ I’ve always believed in Jesus, but at that moment, I wasn’t sure what I believed about everything else.”

Now that some time has passed, Good says she’s reached a place of peace. “I’m grateful,” she said. “I get to start over. In my prime, with everything happening in my life and career—I get to do this again.”

Meanwhile, Franklin also addressed the breakup during a recent interview on Tamron Hall. He admitted he had to sit in the pain and let it teach him. “Pain is a teacher,” he said. “We’re always trying to feel good, but our feelings reveal what’s really going on inside.”

Despite going their separate ways, both Meagan Good and DeVon Franklin seem committed to growth, healing, and stepping into the next chapter of their lives—with love and respect for the past.
