Porsha Williams is giving credit where it’s due, reflecting on how she got her start in radio and television after going through one of the most challenging periods of her life. During a conversation on-air, she expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity she received from Rickey Smiley following her divorce, which left her starting over from scratch.

“You gave me the opportunity right after a divorce,” Porsha recalled. “I remember I came in for an interview, and you were like, ‘Hey, would you like to come up here if somebody’s off and guest host?’ And I said, yeah. You actually let me come in on the radio show a couple of times, and then Dish Nation, y’all let me learn on the job.”

Da Brat chimed in, acknowledging how the platform helped both of them in their careers. Porsha went on to explain how impactful the experience was, especially during such a difficult time. “For a person going through a divorce and losing everything, and then you get this opportunity… You took me under your wing. Y’all taught me comedy, comedic timing, how to be on the radio, how to do TV.” She emphasized how much the support meant to her, particularly from Rickey Smiley. “I always thank Dish Nation. I thank this whole team. I especially thank you, Rickey, because people like you lift women up in their hard times.”

Da Brat echoed the sentiment, sharing how she also benefited from Rickey’s generosity. “Same thing with me,” she said. “I had just come home from prison, and I was like, ‘Man, where’s the work at?’ The opportunity to do radio gave me the opportunity to do this and gave me a whole new look.”

Porsha and Da Brat both acknowledged how the transition into radio and TV reshaped their careers. “You’re a rapper,” Porsha said to Da Brat. “I came from the reality world. This gave me a whole new respect as talent overall for TV—being able to be a TV host, all of that.”

Rickey Smiley responded with admiration, highlighting their hard work and eagerness to learn. “It was easy, Porsha, because you and Brat just had a good attitude. Y’all came in hungry, came to work on time, looking to be better.” He recalled how he mentored them differently, needing to push Da Brat forward while helping Porsha balance her high energy. “I had to push Brat out there, but I had to pull Porsha in. Like two different energies.”

Porsha also shared a moment that stuck with her, recalling how Rickey reacted to her personal struggles. “I remember one thing he said to me. He said, ‘That’s a damn shame for a man to kick a woman out like that. I would never do nobody like that.’ He didn’t say right then what he was gonna do, but when the opportunity came, he put me at the table. He gave me that seat, and I was supposed to run with it. And I did.”

Through hard work and support, Porsha turned her opportunity into a thriving career in both radio and television, proving that resilience and the right support system can make all the difference.
