Kanye West, also known as Ye, has revealed that his initial diagnosis of bipolar disorder was incorrect, and he has since been diagnosed with autism. Speaking on The Download podcast with Justin Laboy, West shared that his wife, Bianca Censori, encouraged him to seek a second opinion. “My wife insisted on it because she felt that my personality traits didn’t align with bipolar disorder. She told me, ‘I’ve seen bipolar behavior before, and this doesn’t seem like that,’” West explained. “Eventually, I discovered that I am actually autistic.”

West explained that the autism diagnosis gave him clarity about certain behaviors he had exhibited in the past. He shared how his intense focus on specific things sometimes led to his behavior being misunderstood. “Autism makes you focus intensely on specific things,” he said. “‘I’m wearing this Trump hat because I genuinely like Trump.’ And when people tell you not to, you just become fixated on it. That’s the struggle I face.”

The rapper also talked about how his contrarian nature impacts his creativity. “When fans suggest I should make an album a certain way, I tend to do the complete opposite,” he added, referencing his song Can’t Tell Me Nothing. He explained that his unique creative process often leads him to go against popular expectations.

West also opened up about his relationship with President Trump and his decision to wear a MAGA hat. He explained, “I wanted to wear it because I like Trump in general.” He reflected on how his behavior, including his strong opinions and actions, could be influenced by his condition. “A lot of what was sending me into the episodes…the constant feeling of not being in control spun me out of control,” he said. Now that he has a clearer understanding of his diagnosis, West mentioned that he is better able to recognize when an episode is approaching and manage it. However, he expressed a concern about medication, stating that he fears it would “block the creativity” he believes he brings to the world.
