On February 2, West, 47, attended his first Grammys red carpet in a decade, arriving with his 30-year-old wife, Bianca Censori. While initially covered in a large fur coat, Censori made headlines by dramatically removing it on the spot, revealing a completely sheer dress without a bra or underwear. The provocative display appeared to be a deliberate nod to West’s Vulture 1 album cover, which features a woman in a thong and thigh-high boots posing with her back to the camera. However, the couple did not stay for the ceremony. Despite speculation that they were removed from the event, reports indicate that West simply left in his car after their red carpet appearance.

Censori’s near-nude look sparked backlash, with many viewers expressing outrage, particularly over concerns that young attendees or viewers at home were exposed to her revealing outfit. A widely shared image from the Daily Mail even captured a child peeking from behind the step-and-repeat as Censori posed. The controversy has also reignited discussions about the Grammys’ dress code, which was outlined in a 2013 “Standard and Practice Wardrobe Advisory” from CBS.

According to the guidelines, all on-camera talent and audience members are expected to comply with network policies that prohibit exposure or near-exposure of certain body parts. The advisory specifically requires that “buttocks and female breasts” be “adequately covered,” bans sheer or see-through clothing that could expose “female breast nipples,” and restricts revealing outfits that display “bare fleshy under curves of the buttock and buttock crack.” Additionally, it mandates that the “genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible ‘puffy’ bare skin exposure.” Items such as thong costumes and outfits exposing “bare sides or under curvature of the breasts” were also listed as problematic. While these rules haven’t been publicly discussed in years, it remains unclear if they are still enforced.

A source told the Daily Mail that Grammy organizers took immediate action upon seeing Censori’s outfit, informing West’s team that they had to leave due to concerns over potential violations if her attire had been broadcast live. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) guidelines, last updated in 2021, state that obscene content is not protected by the First Amendment and is strictly prohibited on cable, satellite, and broadcast television. This means CBS, or any other network airing the pre-show, could not have legally televised Censori’s outfit without repercussions.

Beyond the Grammys’ dress code, Censori’s attire may have also conflicted with Los Angeles or California’s public indecency laws, which define indecent exposure as intentionally revealing one’s genitals or naked body in a way that could offend or annoy others. However, no legal action has been taken against her.

So far, neither the Recording Academy, CBS, nor representatives for West and Censori have addressed the controversy. PEOPLE reached out to the Grammys for clarification on their current dress code but has not received a response.
