The Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and producer was mid-conversation with the Associated Press when one of the interviewers suddenly called out Roan’s name upon spotting her in the background.

Recognizing the shift in focus, Babyface took the interruption in stride. “You guys wanna do that? Go do that,” he said with a gracious smile, handing back the mic and stepping aside. One of the interviewers quickly apologized, saying, “So sorry, Babyface. So sorry,” before both turned their attention to Roan.

Roan, a breakout star nominated for six awards—including Album of the Year and Best New Artist—has been a major topic of conversation leading up to the Grammys. However, the way the reporters handled the situation didn’t sit well with many viewers online.

The interaction quickly went viral, with fans and fellow artists criticizing the apparent lack of respect shown to Babyface, a veteran in the industry with a decades-long career. Grammy-winning legend Dionne Warwick was among those who weighed in, reacting on X (formerly Twitter) with, “Am I seeing this right?”

Social media users echoed similar sentiments, with many expressing disappointment over how easily a music legend was sidelined for a newer artist. The moment has since sparked a debate on how the industry treats veteran Black artists compared to fresh talent, particularly in mainstream spaces.

While Babyface remained unbothered in the moment, the viral clip continues to fuel discussions about respect and recognition in the music industry.
