Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith may have been living separate lives for years, but their connection remains intact. Despite separating in 2016, the couple—married since 1997—has not fully cut ties, according to multiple sources.

“Call it what you want. They are living their own lives but haven’t completely severed ties,” a source told PEOPLE. Another insider confirmed, “They are still together,” but added that they “have had separate homes for years.”
Jada first revealed their separation in 2023 while promoting her memoir, Worthy. At the time, she shared, “We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.” She also emphasized her support for Will, saying, “I’m going to be by his side … but also allow him to have to figure this out for himself.”

Currently, Will, 56, remains focused on film and music. “Will is busy with film and music and doing okay,” a source said. Though “a bit disillusioned with Hollywood,” the actor is staying active in entertainment. He and Big Sean recently dropped a Matrix-inspired music video for their song Beautiful Scars.
Over the years, both Will and Jada have spoken candidly about their unconventional marriage. On On Purpose with Jay Shetty in 2023, Jada admitted, “There have been several breakups between Will and I.” In his 2021 memoir Will, the Men in Black star reflected on their journey, saying, “We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way.”

The couple shares two children, Jaden, 26, and Willow, 24, while Will also has a 32-year-old son, Trey, from his previous marriage to Sheree Zampino. Their blended family, including Jada’s mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris, last made a public appearance together at the May 2024 premiere of Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Despite their separation, Will and Jada still celebrate milestones together. A source told PEOPLE that they spent Thanksgiving 2024 with loved ones. “Everyone was in wonderful and very grateful spirits,” the insider shared.
