Detroit rapper Dajua Blanding, known as Dank Demoss, has filed a lawsuit against Lyft after a driver refused to give her a ride, allegedly due to her weight. The incident, which was captured on video, occurred earlier this month when Blanding requested a ride to a Detroit Lions watch party.

When the driver arrived, he told Blanding she wouldn’t fit in his sedan. “I can fit in this car,” she responded, but the driver insisted, “Believe me, you can’t.” He then claimed his tires wouldn’t be able to support her weight, apologized, and suggested she order a larger Uber XL. He also assured her that she would receive a refund so she wouldn’t be charged.

Blanding, who weighs approximately 400 pounds, believes the refusal was unnecessary and discriminatory. “I’ve been in cars smaller than that,” she told FOX 2. “I just want them to know that it hurt my feelings.”

Now, Blanding has retained attorneys Jonathan Marko and Zach Runyan to take legal action against Lyft. Marko argues that Michigan law protects against weight-based discrimination, making the driver’s actions illegal. “I knew that it was illegal, and I knew that it was wrong,” he said. He further compared the situation to denying someone a ride based on race or religion, which is prohibited under state law.

While Lyft drivers have the right to refuse passengers for safety concerns, Marko insists that denying service based on weight does not qualify as a valid reason.

In response, Lyft issued a statement: “Lyft unequivocally condemns all forms of discrimination—we believe in a community where everyone is treated with equal respect and mutual kindness. Our community guidelines and terms of service explicitly prohibit harassment or discrimination.”
