Marlon Wayans is standing up for Snoop Dogg after the rapper faced backlash for performing at the Crypto Ball during inauguration weekend. The event, which also featured Rick Ross and Soulja Boy, was perceived by many as aligning with Donald Trump. While Snoop has stayed silent, Soulja Boy addressed critics on Instagram Live, defending his decision and emphasizing the lucrative payday he received.

Wayans, however, offered a different perspective during a recent interview with Cincinnati radio station The Wiz (WIZF-FM). He suggested that Snoop and others might not have fully understood the event’s ties to Trump. “To be honest with you, I don’t know if they knew it was [an] underwritten Trump event,” Wayans said. “I think they thought it was a Bitcoin event, and when they came to find out it was a ball that was [for Trump] … it was too late to pull out. But, you know, that’s why you gotta check the fine print.”

Beyond defending Snoop, Wayans took issue with the public criticism aimed at him. “I know Snoop, and I know Snoop has always been a real one,” he stated. “I’m not gonna allow for public skewering.” He also urged for greater unity within the community. “We are divided enough, and at some point, we gotta get out of our emotions and into unity. That is the only thing that’s going to get us past or equal to where things are going,” he explained. “Get rid of all the toxic feelings about each other. Everybody come together, especially Black and brown, and figure out what to do ‘cause doors are closing … but other opportunities are opening up.”

On the “R&B Money Podcast” (Jan. 25), Snoop briefly reflected on dealing with negativity. Speaking with hosts Tank and J. Valentine, the rapper shared his strategy for overcoming criticism. “You ‘gon deal with hate when you get to the top, no matter who you are,” he said. “Do you answer it with hate, or do you answer with love and success? Me, personally, I answer it with success and love. That’s my answer to any hate and negativity that comes my way, ‘cause it’s the strongest force that can beat it.”
Wayans’ defense of Snoop highlights the importance of understanding and unity within the community, even in the face of controversy.
