Sheryl Lee Ralph and Senator Vincent Hughes may live in separate cities, but their nearly 20-year marriage is a testament to love and independence. The Abbott Elementary star recently opened up about their nontraditional living arrangement, which has kept their bond thriving since tying the knot in 2005.

Ralph, 69, met Hughes during her run in Thoroughly Modern Millie on Broadway, not long after her divorce from Eric Maurice, with whom she shares two children, Etienne and Coco. Despite their immediate connection, the couple realized early on that their demanding careers would keep them apart—she in Hollywood and he in Philadelphia.
“You fall in love with somebody and realize he’s not leaving his career, and I’m not leaving mine,” Ralph shared. “When you have children, it’s very difficult.” They adopted a unique solution: seeing each other every two weeks, a practice they’ve continued for nearly two decades.

“When I go to see him, I love to see him. When it’s time to leave, ‘Bye-bye. See you soon.’ I’m telling you, life is good,” Ralph said, emphasizing the joy in their time together.
The arrangement allows them to balance independence with togetherness. “He has his own life, I have my own life. He has his own real career, I have my own real career,” Ralph explained. “He’s doing his thing, and I get to do mine. It works because we respect each other’s light.”
As they approach their 20th wedding anniversary in July, Ralph reflected on the strength of their connection, acknowledging how many couples struggle to stay together. “Some people can’t even get through two years, so it’s all good. It is all good.”

Ralph credits their success to open communication, a lesson learned after her first marriage. “I’ve evolved into [saying], ‘Let’s talk about it,’” she said. “If you sit in problems, you get anxious, depressed, and all the juiciness in life starts to dry up. I can’t have that, because all of that will mess with my good looks!”
