Tyler Perry is determined to ensure his son, Aman, grows up understanding the value of money. During a recent appearance on Sherri, Perry explained why his son’s Christmas gifts are kept simple, limited to “books and Legos.” He shared that he wants to avoid raising “one of those ridiculous, spoiled rich kids.”

As a filmmaker, actor, producer, and studio executive, Perry has built an empire with hit projects like The Six Triple Eight, Mea Culpa, and his iconic Madea franchise. Yet, one of his most cherished roles is being a father. Perry welcomed Aman, his only child, on November 30, 2014, with his ex-partner, model and activist Gelila Bekele. The name Aman, meaning “peace,” holds deep significance for Perry. Reflecting on fatherhood shortly after Aman’s birth, Perry wrote on Instagram, “I have traveled the world trying to find the peace that I have when I’m holding my sleeping son in my arms. God thank you! Amen for Aman.”

Although Perry and Bekele ended their relationship in 2020, they remain committed co-parents. Their shared goal is to keep Aman grounded despite his father’s success. “Gelila is very grounded and balanced, making sure he stays that way,” Perry said during a 2022 Q&A with Gayle King at the Tribeca Film Festival. “I want to give him everything because I didn’t have it, but I know the importance of teaching him values.”
In an interview with AARP The Magazine, Perry reiterated his commitment to raising Aman with humility, adding that parenting is a collaborative effort with Bekele. By limiting extravagant gifts and focusing on meaningful ones, Perry is shaping a foundation of gratitude and responsibility for his son.
