During the ceremony, Washington addressed the congregation, reflecting on his spiritual path. “It took a while, but I’m finally here,” he shared, according to Archbishop Christopher Bryant. Encouraging others to trust in their faith, he added, “If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit.”

The moment was an emotional one for Washington and his family. His wife of 41 years, Pauletta Washington, spoke proudly of her husband’s commitment to his faith. “Forty-six years later, here I’m still standing next to him as only God will have it,” she said. The actress praised Denzel’s influence on their children—John, 40, Katia, 37, and twins Olivia and Malcolm, 33—saying, “You have set a great example for our children, who are now adult children who know the difference because we have shown them the difference.”

Dressed casually in a gray T-shirt and black sweatpants, Denzel was visibly moved, appearing to wipe away tears as Pauletta spoke. He later posed with his certificate of baptism and minister’s license, marking this milestone in his life.
The baptism comes shortly after Washington spoke candidly about faith in Hollywood during a November interview with Esquire. “When you see me, you see the best I could do with what I’ve been given by my lord and savior. I’m unafraid,” he said. Addressing the challenges of openly discussing religion in the entertainment industry, he added, “You can’t talk like that and win Oscars. You can’t talk like that and party. You can’t say that in this town.”

Despite this, Washington remains steadfast in his beliefs. “I’m free now,” he said. “It’s not talked about in this town. It’s not fashionable. It’s not sexy. But that doesn’t mean people in Hollywood don’t believe.”
