A Washington, D.C., jury has ordered Rudy Giuliani to pay nearly $150 million to two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss, for the harm caused by defamatory statements he made about them following the 2020 election. Freeman was awarded $16,171,000 for defamation and an additional $20 million for emotional distress. Moss received $16,998,000 for defamation along with $20 million for emotional distress. The jury also awarded $75 million in punitive damages to both plaintiffs.

Giuliani listened attentively as the verdict was read, taking notes on a touch-screen device. After the court session, the former New York mayor and attorney for Donald Trump expressed his intention to appeal. Freeman and Moss celebrated the verdict, embracing each other and their legal team in the courtroom. Freeman shared her gratitude, stating, “Today is a good day. A jury stood witness to what Rudy Giuliani did to me and my daughter and held him accountable.”

Moss reflected on the impact of Giuliani’s lies on their lives, saying, “The flame that Giuliani lit with those lies changed every aspect of our lives, our homes, our family, our work, our sense of safety, our mental health, and we’re still working to rebuild.” She emphasized their hope that no one else has to endure what they have experienced.

Earlier this summer, Giuliani was found liable for defamation against Freeman and Moss after failing to respond to parts of their lawsuit. They claimed to have suffered emotional and reputational harm, as well as threats to their safety, after Giuliani made false claims of ballot tampering in Georgia. During the trial, Freeman and Moss shared harrowing details of the harassment they faced following Giuliani’s statements.

Giuliani’s attorney attempted to frame him as a good man with a distinguished career, arguing against the severity of the judgment. After the verdict, Giuliani insisted he would appeal, claiming, “The absurdity of the number merely underscores the absurdity of the entire proceeding.” He expressed concerns about the fairness of the trial but did not elaborate on specific grievances.

Financially, Giuliani has claimed he struggles to pay his debts and has not responded to many subpoenas in this case. He has been fined over $200,000 for previous attorney fees, has faced lawsuits over unpaid debts, and is currently trying to sell his Manhattan apartment, listed for $6.1 million. It remains uncertain whether he can declare bankruptcy to avoid paying the damages awarded to Freeman and Moss.
