After winning the inaugural “Best African Music Performance” GRAMMY earlier this year, Tyla will likely see her debut album compete in the Pop category in the 2025 ceremony.

According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Tyla’s team submitted the self-titled album for “Best R&B Album.” However, the Recording Academy’s R&B screening committee – consisting of R&B producers, songwriters, and other experts in the genre – decided to kick it out of consideration for the category.

The album is now a contender for a nomination in the “Best Pop Vocal Album” category. If nominated, Tyla would compete alongside albums like Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short N’ Sweet, Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine, and Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

The move is surprising considering Tyla’s recent success on the R&B charts. Six tracks from the album – a mix of Amapiano, Afrobeats, and R&B – landed on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart, with the viral smash “Water” peaking at #1.

Tyla’s exclusion from the R&B category comes after the Recording Academy faced similar criticism for including Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby” in the rap category – despite Richman himself saying that he’s not a hip-hop artist.

The Recording Academy will announce the 2025 nominations on November 8. The show will air live on February 2 from LA’s Crypto.com Arena.
