The Exonerated Five’s beef with former president Donald Trump has now reached the courtroom in a new defamation lawsuit filed in a Pennsylvania federal court on Monday (October 21).

According to Forbes, the five men formerly known as the Central Park 5 – Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise, and Yusef Salaam – are suing Trump for comments he made during last month’s Presidential Debate.

During the debate, Vice President Kamala Harris called Trump to task for his discriminatory actions against Black Americans in the past, including his full-page ad in the New York Times calling for the men’s execution in the Central Park rape case. In response, Trump continued to claim that the men were responsible for the crime and falsely said that a victim died.

They come up with things like what she just said going back many, many years when a lot of people including Mayor Bloomberg agreed with me on the Central Park Five. They admitted — they said, they pled guilty. And I said, well, if they pled guilty they badly hurt a person, killed a person ultimately. And if they pled guilty — then they pled we’re not guilty. But this is a person that has to stretch back years, 40, 50 years ago because there’s nothing now.

Transcript from The Singju Post

To clarify, the men never pled guilty to any crimes associated with the attack, and the victim, Trisha Meili, is still alive.

In their lawsuit, the Exonerated Five said that the former president’s comments “defamed them, painted them in an offensive false light, and intentionally inflicted emotional distress by making his claims on the national debate stage.”

They are seeking an unspecified amount in compensatory and punitive damages.

This is a developing story.
