Rich Lowry, editor-in-chief of National Review, appeared to use a racial slur during a discussion on The Megyn Kelly Show while talking about false rumors surrounding Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. Lowry seemed to slip up when he said, “Police have gone through 11 months of recordings of calls, and they’ve only found two Springfield residents calling to complain about Haitian [n-word],” before quickly correcting himself by saying “migrants.”

Kelly did not acknowledge the apparent slip-up, and the conversation continued. Both she and Lowry then shifted to defending Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance, who had been criticized for spreading false claims about the Haitian migrant community. Vance had made debunked statements, falsely linking Haitian immigrants to pet abductions and the spread of diseases like HIV and tuberculosis.

Despite admitting that the claims were untrue, Vance justified his comments during a CNN interview with Dana Bash, stating, “If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m going to do because you guys are completely letting Kamala Harris coast.”
The false narrative that Haitian immigrants were stealing and eating pets had gained traction after former President Donald Trump referenced it during a presidential debate. Local officials in Springfield quickly debunked the claims, stating there was no evidence to support such accusations.

Following the backlash over his comment on Kelly’s show, Lowry responded on social media, claiming he misspoke. He explained that he “began to mispronounce the word ‘migrants’ and caught myself halfway through.”
