The police officer who arrested NFL star Tyreek Hill in Florida has a history of disciplinary issues, including six suspensions and multiple reprimands, according to records from the Miami-Dade Police Department. NBC, which reviewed Torres’ employee records, reports that the officer faced two five-day suspensions in both 2014 and 2016, followed by a 20-day suspension in 2018 and another 10-day suspension in 2019. In addition to these suspensions, Torres received four written reprimands between 1999 and 2020.

Despite facing numerous complaints during his 27-year tenure, most of which were cleared, eight complaints against Torres were “sustained,” specifically related to his improper use of force and failure to adhere to body camera protocols.

Torres has since been placed on administrative duties following his widely criticized arrest of Tyreek Hill on September 8. The incident, which was caught on video and quickly spread online, shows Hill being pulled over for speeding and then forcibly removed from his vehicle after being slow to lower his window. In the footage, Torres can be seen forcing Hill to the ground, using his knee to pin the NFL player’s back as he handcuffed him.

Hill, who went on to play in a Miami Dolphins victory later that day, spoke out about the arrest. He described the force used against him, saying police “beat the dog out” of him, though he also expressed some regret, admitting he could have handled the situation differently by rolling down his window sooner. However, Hill was adamant that Torres should face consequences, stating, “He’s gotta go, man.”

The Miami-Dade County Chief of Public Safety, James Reyes, responded to the growing outrage, acknowledging that the actions shown in the video “do not meet the standard we expect from law enforcement.” He promised accountability and said the investigation into Torres’ conduct is ongoing.
