Taylor Swift made headlines Tuesday night when she took to Instagram to announce her support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. The post came shortly after the first debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump, where Swift shared her decision to vote for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” Swift wrote, explaining that Harris champions the causes she believes need a strong advocate. “Kamala fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” she added.
Swift praised Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and expressed hope that the country could accomplish more under Harris’ leadership of “calm and not chaos.” She also lauded Walz for his support of LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedom, and access to in-vitro fertilization (IVF), highlighting the importance of those issues to her decision.

In a lighthearted jab at the Republican ticket, Swift signed off as “Childless Cat Lady,” a phrase used by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, in a 2021 interview. Vance had controversially remarked that “a bunch of childless cat ladies” were running the country, a statement he later said was meant to be sarcastic but nonetheless received significant backlash.
Swift also addressed recent AI-generated images that falsely suggested she had endorsed Trump. She noted that these misleading images pushed her to be transparent about her actual voting intentions. “I need to be very clear about my plans for this election as a voter,” she wrote.

Encouraging her fans to do their own research, Swift concluded, “Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”
Swift’s political endorsements have been a topic of discussion since 2018 when she first voiced support for a Democratic candidate in Tennessee’s Senate race. Since then, she has consistently backed Democratic candidates, including President Joe Biden in 2020.
In response to Swift’s post, Harris’ running mate, Governor Walz, expressed his gratitude during a live MSNBC interview, calling on Swift’s fanbase, the “Swifties,” to get involved.
Meanwhile, Trump downplayed the significance of Swift’s endorsement in an interview, saying he preferred the support of NFL star Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, and criticized Swift as “very liberal.”
