Donald Trump’s choice of J.D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate has sparked considerable debate. During a recent interview, Trump dismissed concerns about Vance’s suitability, arguing that vice presidential picks historically have little impact on elections. “Historically, the vice president, in terms of the election, does not have any impact,” Trump said. “I mean, virtually no impact.… Virtually never has it mattered.”

Vance echoed this sentiment in his own way, stating, “My attitude is, it doesn’t really matter, as much as this is a hit to my ego.” He added, “People are going to vote primarily for Donald Trump or for Kamala Harris. That’s the way these things go.” Vance’s focus has been on attacking Harris rather than emphasizing his own role.

Initially, Vance’s selection seemed unimportant due to Trump’s expected large margin of victory. However, with the race tightening and Trump showing signs of diminished energy, Vance’s role could become more significant. Trump has struggled to maintain his usual energetic campaign pace, stating he won’t return to the campaign trail until after August 22. In contrast, during the 2016 campaign, Trump held 27 rallies in 15 states by August.

This reduced campaign activity has led to concerns about Vance’s impact. Trump’s subdued demeanor and diminished stamina could make Vance’s off-putting qualities more problematic. As Trump’s campaign struggles, Vance’s uninspiring presence could highlight Trump’s weaknesses. Vance’s controversial views and lack of mainstream appeal may further exacerbate Trump’s vulnerabilities.

In summary, while Trump and Vance initially downplayed the significance of the vice presidential pick, the tight race and Trump’s reduced campaign activity suggest that Vance could become a liability. His lack of appeal and controversial stance might not only fail to support Trump but could also amplify his existing shortcomings.
