Joe Biden has proposed significant reforms to the U.S. Supreme Court, including instituting 18-year term limits for justices and pursuing a constitutional amendment to eliminate presidential immunity for crimes committed while in office.

The White House announced these changes on Monday, which include replacing the current lifetime appointments with a fixed term for justices and implementing a binding code of ethics. The reforms also aim to overturn a July Supreme Court decision that granted former presidents broad immunity from prosecution—a ruling praised by Donald Trump during his legal troubles.

In a Washington Post op-ed, Biden underscored the principle that “No one is above the law,” a cornerstone of the nation’s foundation. He is expected to formally support these reforms in a speech at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.

This move represents a significant shift for Biden, who had been previously reluctant to endorse court reform. With his extensive background as a former Senate Judiciary Committee chair, Biden’s stance highlights growing concerns about the Supreme Court’s current direction and recent controversial decisions.

Passing these reforms may face hurdles in a narrowly divided Congress, especially with the upcoming election. Democrats are aiming to rally public opinion against the Supreme Court, which has recently made decisions such as overturning the constitutional right to abortion and limiting executive agency power.

Kamala Harris, the likely Democratic presidential nominee, supported these reforms as essential for restoring trust in the court, upholding democratic values, and ensuring accountability for all.
