Democrats Divided as Pressure Grows for Biden to Step Aside

Democrats frustrated with the uncertainty surrounding President Joe Biden’s future as the 2024 nominee felt a flicker of hope on Thursday. Reports surfaced that top party leaders, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, had frank discussions with Biden about his prospects following a poor debate performance last month and his struggle to recover.

A source familiar with the Biden campaign’s strategy expressed optimism, stating, “It is very encouraging. It looks like Democratic leadership is now applying the pressure we needed them to. I expect and hope that the president does the right thing and decides not to run for reelection within the next week.”

Since the June debate, where Biden’s inconsistent answers and vacant expressions heightened concerns about his age and ability to defeat Trump, pressure on him has been mounting. Over 20 Democrats in Congress have called for Biden to end his campaign, fearing he might jeopardize other candidates’ chances.

Despite Biden’s efforts to reassure the party through aggressive campaigning, including unscripted interviews and increased travel, setbacks continued. This week, Biden contracted COVID-19, taking him off the campaign trail and contrasting his vitality with Trump’s, who was photographed raising a fist shortly after an assassination attempt.
California Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff and Maryland Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin also joined the calls for Biden to step aside. However, Biden’s campaign has maintained that he will remain the Democratic presidential nominee, even as he reportedly becomes more open to arguments against staying in the race.
